Alienware-OC-Controls-Application_D7W6H_WIN64_1.2.70.1237_A00.EXE Should I buy a Dell Alienware laptop? Why you should never buy a Dell Alienware laptop? I just Bought a Dell Alienware Area-51m laptop. Horrible tech support is not the only reason you shouldn’t buy a Dell computer. (without prejudice)

Alienware is an American computer hardware subsidiary of Dell. Their products are designed for gaming and can be identified by their alien-themed designs. Alienware was founded in 1996 by Nelson Gonzalez and Alex Aguila, and is currently lead by Vivian Lien. The company’s corporate headquarters is located in The Hammocks, in Miami, Florida.

Boasting about their superior gaming hardware and premium customer service, at one point they actually had a shot.

Recently, Dell has dropped the ball on the quality of products and customer support that customers are paying top dollar for with Dell. 🙁

Check out Dells own forum of disappointed customers. (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9) or consumer affairs.

As a matter of fact, do your own simple search with your favorite search engine to find out the truth about Dell customers and

their horrible experiences with Dell support and defective hardware from around the world.

Picture this, 3 young kids learning at home because of Covid-19. Each child needs a computer setup and ready for them to begin schooling. As I struggle with Dell Support, and Warranty for this machine and juggle the home and business machines. Thank goodness the world shutdown, I needed that catch-up time. Unless you have thousands of dollar to give away to Dell while they sell you outdated and defective hardware (1, 2, 3, 4) and buggy proprietary software (1, 2, 3, 4) and customer support that only seems to know how to tell you:

Re-install Windows.” 🙂

If you are OK with this level of sub-par professionalism, and tech support, then stop reading this article. Go buy a Dell Alienware from here instead. Dont forget to bookmark this for when they disappoint you. 🙂

From this point on we will share with you our personal experience with a purchase of a Dell Alienware Area-51m laptop for our business operations.  Here is the time-line:

  • GPU: NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2080 (Laptop)
  • Display: 17.3”, Full HD (1920 x 1080), 144 Hz, IPS.

  • RAM: 16GB DDR4, 2666 MHz.
  • Weight: 4.40 kg (9.7 lbs)

Approx March 2020 Dell Alienware Area-51m laptop arrives.

The machine looks very attractive with all the bells and whistles, lights, and the dreaded Alienware Command Center OC controls. In short Alienware Command Center OC controls is proprietary software that allows you to control fan speed, over-clocking, and the fancy lights on the keyboard and top of the laptop. The machine is very bulky and heavy and requires two large chargers to keep it powered. Average battery life is 1-2 hours on batter saver mode. A joke from the beginning.

dell tech support

Summarizing Dell Technical Support. 🙂

At this point I am done with the defective hardware and poorly designed proprietary software from Dell. Alienware-OC-Controls-Application_D7W6H_WIN64_1.2.70.1237_A00.EXE

“I want a refund. Or exchange for this defective product that does not work as advertised.”

The tech support agent and warranty department says the following:

“Its been over 30 days and no returns allowed after 30 days. In order to get computer fixed you must re-install windows to see if that fixes the issue.”

Let me clarify here. In the above weekly time-line, it appears that each week I restored and re-installed Windows, 5 times. Yes, those are the 5 times I called Dell Tech Support only. I actually did a restore and re-install of Windows 10 a total of approx 12-13 times as I struggled to make sense of this Alien technology.

Besides since when is a company allowed to falsely advertise a product and/or service, then give you the run around of re-installing Windows, to only tell you that you have exhausted your 30 day return. Then to add insult to injury, leave us with a machine without the advertised features working or using the Dell premium support that we paid for.

So for approx a month and change I have been re-installing windows and restoring this Dell Alienware Area-51m laptop to factory defaults to still have these issues today, without resolve:

  • Computer still slow (Dell bloatware SupportAssist three different versions?)
  • Computer still freezing for 5-15 seconds then resuming. (utilizing 100% processor usage.) (1, 2, 3, 4)
  • Dell Alienware Control Center (OC Controls) not working rendering the computer a paperweight.

Like bloody hell I am going to waste another day re-installing Windows with all my programs and files, yet AGAIN making it the 13th or 14th time now.

We thought replacing defective hardware was part of the warranty processes?

We thought that Dell customer premium support that we pay for is honored?

I guess you have to re-install Windows/restore a certain number of times until they can release an update to their poorly designed propitiatory software or exhaust your return warranty. Hmm, interesting common denominators here Dell. Are you going bankrupt or something?

Until the matter is resolved (possibly in court.) I cannot release any emails, or tech support transcripts yet.

Are you going to dance with your hands on my ass all night Dell? Or are you going to make your move? Balls in your court Dell.

UPDATE – later today.

Dell made their move today. Except it wasn’t really a move, more or less, they tripped over their own corporate balls. 🙂

They released yet another useless update to the Alienware Command Center OC Controls that still dont work on my Alienware Area-51m paperweight system. The Alienware OC controls they released today was:
Alienware OC Controls Application – Version 1.2.74.1238, A00
Release date:
04 Jun 2020
Last Updated
04 Jun 2020

So I reinstalled Dells new update of Alienware OC Controls Application and Alienware Command Center, didn’t work, again.  I quit.

Come on Dell its only been 10+ years and you still dont know how to make a gaming laptop that works properly?

Thats what makes it even sadder Dell!

Its official, after being ignored, and told to re-install Windows and restore the machine, I packed that useless paperweight back into its box, and shipped it back to sender. And yes I did remove my data. I did a restore like they have been asking me to do for the 13-14th time.

Guess what? Its default factory settings restored, and Alienware Command center and OC controls still didn’t work. Go figure eh.

FULL E-mails, chat transcripts, etc… to be released after matter is settled.

If you have been cheated by Dell there is something you can do in the mean time.

File a complaint against Dell with the BBB (Better Business Bureau) stating exactly what happened, and how your matter was handled.

Be truthful, and the collective will speak for itself. 🙂

Dell hardware, software and tech support sucks, now what?

Life goes on. Plenty of fish in the sea as they say. I have wasted almost a combined month of setting up and re-setting up a Dell Alienware Area-51m laptop. With the only resolve from Dell tech support being:

“Re-install Windows, again.”

I get it Dell. Sometimes Microsoft releases a security patch for Windows 10 that breaks Windows or other software. However stop using this as your crutch. If I have to choose between Dell or Microsoft the answer is simple, Microsoft.

So we need a computer like since last month. Now what?

Dell Alternatives:

1) Lenovo (Formerly IBM) – Dell Alternative

Lenovo is a Chinese multinational technology company with headquarters in Beijing. It Like Dell, Lenovo also specializes in designing, manufacturing, and selling of a number of computers and computer-related devices, software, servers, and workstations. Nevertheless, most of the products are quite pricey to an average market hence giving it the challenge to generate more sales, notwithstanding. The advantage of Apple is its customer retention. Most Macbook users stay with Macbooks and hardly ever shift to windows. As Dell is dependent on Windows for its performance, the more Apple OS becomes popular, the more will be the business loss to Dell. This makes Apple a global threat to Dell and hence it is one of the top Dell Competitors.

3) SamsungDell Alternative

Samsung Group is a South Korean conglomerate company founded in 1938. Most of the products it specialized in producing include PCs, servers, printers and various imaging products. Its merger with Compaq in 2002 and eventual acquisition of EDS also played a significant role in its revenue growth. It, however, split its computer and printer business from products and services business in 2015, which would see it coming with two independent entities of HP Inc and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. All the same, it is still a brand to beat in this particular industry.

5) AcerDell Alternative

This is attributed to the fact that it majors in other areas of its production line hence overlooking its computer hardware market.

It thus does not pose as a major competitor in the computer hardware and telecommunication market as it stands but still covers a considerable market share.

7) ToshibaDell Alternative

Similar to Sony, Toshiba is also a Japanese based conglomerate technology company with a rich history in this computer industry. All along its existence, Toshiba has been able to make quite a significant number of acquisitions that enhanced its presence in various consumer and professionals electronics markets as well as the industrial market. It has been a force to reckon in the computer hardware products known for manufacturing and selling the high number of PCs and related devices.

Additionally, Toshiba has also ventured into home appliances industry and currently manufacturers smart TVs, sound systems and a wide range of other consumer electronics. But the change in leadership in the recent past has made it possible for Microsoft to scale down on its production of hardware products and rather focus on software and cloud-based services. But with the latest Microsoft surface, Microsoft has received greater acceptance in the laptop market and might be one of the future Dell Competitors on a large scale.

So what Dell alternative did we choose?

Simple, Surface Pro 7 – Platinum, Intel Core i7, 16GB, 1TB. You might be asking:

Why Microsoft?

This way since Microsoft makes both the hardware (Microsoft Surface) and the software (Windows 10) the same company cannot blame another company for its own mistakes… 🙂

We get a computer that works, and is reliable.

“But wait. I am a gamer. Microsoft Surface is not enough power for me.”

In that case, go with the Japanese Asus. Check out these bad boys: Asus ROG Gaming Laptops.
