According to Facebook, the campaign they targeted was indeed connected to the IRA. The company’s efforts led to the removal of a small yet significant network consisting of 13 accounts and two pages. These entities were primarily focused on influencing public debate not only in the United States but also in other nations such as the UK and Egypt. Despite these efforts, Facebook noted that the reach of this operation was relatively minimal. This is evident from the fact that approximately 14,000 accounts followed one or more of the pages, with the English-language page garnering around 200 followers. An important aspect of this operation was the use of fake names and profile pictures for the accounts, although it appears that real and unwitting freelance writers were employed to produce content for the PeaceData website, which was central to this campaign.
Twitter’s role in this joint operation involved the suspension of five accounts. These accounts were identified as part of the same Russian network and were suspended due to platform manipulation that Twitter traced back to Russian state actors. The content produced by these accounts was described as low quality and spammy, often receiving little to no engagement in terms of Likes or Retweets.
The existence of Russia’s IRA and its activities have been a subject of scrutiny, especially following its indictment by the US Department of Justice. This indictment was part of special counsel Robert Mueller’s investigation into the alleged Russian interference in the 2016 US election campaign. Mueller’s extensive two-year investigation delved into the possible collusion between the 2016 Trump campaign and Russia. His findings concluded that Russia had indeed interfered in the election with the intent to benefit Donald Trump’s campaign, though he did not find conclusive evidence of a conspiracy.
The continued relevance of this issue is underscored by comments from FBI director Christopher Wray earlier this year. Wray pointed out that Russian attempts to spread disinformation on social media have never ceased. However, he also noted that the current scale of these efforts does not match the magnitude observed during the 2016 campaign. This ongoing situation underscores the complexity and persistence of the challenge faced by social media platforms in combating state-sponsored disinformation campaigns, particularly in the context of the upcoming US presidential election between President Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Joe Biden. The recent actions by Facebook and Twitter, in collaboration with the FBI’s Foreign Influence Task Force, highlight the ongoing vigilance required to safeguard public discourse on these platforms.
