Starting Alice 3
The first time you try to run Alice on your computer, the security settings of your computer may not recognize Alice and Alice will not run.
Mac OS X
Right-Click on the icon, and from the menu, select Open. You will then see a dialogue box that indicates that Alice is an unrecognized application and will ask you if you still want to open it. Click on Open. Alice will run normally after this first attempt.
Windows 10
Right-click the file icon and select the option to run as an administrator (even if your account has administrative privileges.) Once permission is given Alice will run normally.
After Alice starts…
Find the Alice 3 startup icon on your system, and start Alice by double-clicking on it.
When Alice starts, a Welcome dialogue box is displayed, as shown below. The Welcome dialogue box has four tabs and the Templates tab is automatically selected. Choose any one of the templates or click on one of the other tabs to select a previously written Alice project.
The red X message in the bottom left of the window is a warning message that indicates a template or a previous project must be selected in this window in order to display a scene. If the Cancel button in the dialogue box is clicked without selecting a template or a previously written project, Alice will close the Welcome dialogue box without displaying the Code editor. To reopen the Welcome dialogue box, click File in the menu bar at the top left of the Alice window and select New from the menu.

Welcome dialog box
Upon successful selection of a template, Alice will display the selected template scene in the upper left corner of the Code Editor, as shown. (The display may vary somewhat, but the basic organization should be the same.)

Troubleshooting: PC display driver updates
If Alice does not start or if the templates are not properly displayed, the display driver on the computer system may need to be updated. For Windows PC users, we advise updating the display driver directly from the display card manufacturer website (rather than using Windows Update). See the following instructions.
System Requirements Hardware Recommendations
- Desktop or laptop computer. however many netbook models are designed to work well with 2D graphics but are not up to snuff when trying to deliver 3D graphics animation. We suggest trying Alice on the netbook that will be used with Alice before purchase.
- 1 GB RAM (2 GB or more is recommended, but not required)
- VGA graphics card capable of high (32 bit) colour and at least 1024×768 resolution (3D video card gives a faster performance, but is not required)
- Soundcard
- Two- or three-button mouse. The touchpad on a laptop may be used. Please note, however, that arranging 3D objects in a virtual world is easier with a mouse than with a touchpad.
Windows
- Windows (XP, Vista 32-bit, Vista 64-bit, Windows 7 32-bit, Windows 7 64-bit, Windows 8 32-bit, Windows 8 64-bit, Windows 10 32-bit, Windows 10 64-bit )
NOTE: The Intel Integrated chipset that is found on many notebook, netbook, and other machines has trouble trying to run Alice. Some higher-end Vista machines have also had difficulties. Decreasing hardware acceleration or decreasing colour resolution (from 32 bit to 16 bit) has sometimes been helpful. See also the note below on updating video drivers.
Mac
- Note: Mac OS X 10.13 (High Sierra) has presented problems for Alice 2.4 and earlier. We are currently working a version release of Alice 2 to address these problems.
- Alice 2.3 and later versions
- Mac OS X 10.6 and later
- Intel processor
- Alice 2.2 and earlier versions
- Mac OS X 10.5 and earlier
- Power PC or Intel Processor
- For earlier versions of Alice, see this link:
http://www.alice.org/index.php?page=downloads/alice2.2_archive
Linux
- Ubuntu, Red Hat
- Alice needs 250MB of free space
- Please have opengl drivers and a Java Runtime Environment.
Video Requirements
A frequent cause of problems encountered when attempting to run Alice is out-of-date video drivers. This is recognizable when a red-screen occurs in the scene view or the run-time window when the Run button is clicked. See the following link for instructions on updating the video drivers of your machine.
Java and Alice 3
The Alice 3 installer makes use of the Java JDK and the JDK is *not* the same as the JRE. If the computer does not already have the Java JDK installed, see these instructions for downloading and installing the JDK prior to downloading and installing Alice 3.
