Elon Musk Compares Tesla’s Optimus Robot Lab to HBO’s ‘Westworld,’ Teases Future Developments

Elon Musk described Tesla’s Optimus robot lab as resembling a scene from HBO’s “Westworld” during a conversation with Tesla investors. He even invited the show’s creators for a tour, highlighting the lab’s cinematic feel. Musk, Tesla’s CEO, recently shared a video on X, showcasing an Optimus robot skillfully folding a shirt. This clip offered a sneak peek into the lab where other robots in different stages of production were also visible.

However, Tesla executive Drew Baglino pointed out that “Westworld,” a show where robots turn violent, might not be the ideal analogy. Meanwhile, another Tesla video on YouTube revealed a motor design engineer working on a robot in a warehouse setting equipped with tool storage shelves. The video’s caption introduced the Optimus lab team, consisting of roboticists, engineers, technicians, actuator designers, and robot design modelers.

The specifics of the Optimus lab remain largely under wraps. However, Tesla’s career page indicated a significant hiring spree for over 50 robotics roles last year, with many positions based in Palo Alto, California. Musk also hinted at the possibility of Tesla beginning to ship some Optimus units next year, acknowledging the challenges and uncertainties in making accurate predictions in such innovative fields. He promised regular updates on Optimus’s progress every few months.

Amid a 26% drop in Tesla shares in 2024, investors are keen for positive developments, especially considering the stock’s 780% surge over the past five years. At the time of reporting, Tesla had not responded to Business Insider’s request for comment, which was made outside of standard business hours.
